It comes with a $15,000 cash award, and a solo exhibition\u00a0 at the Salt Lake Art Center, the permanent home of the Catherine Doctorow Prize for Contemporary Painting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Screen-shot-2011-06-08-at-11.42.15-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2533\" title=\"Screen shot 2011-06-08 at 11.42.15 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Screen-shot-2011-06-08-at-11.42.15-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Screen-shot-2011-06-08-at-11.42.15-AM.png 385w, https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Screen-shot-2011-06-08-at-11.42.15-AM-300x127.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/a>Schoenstadt&#8217;s site-specific projects, which frequently include elements of  audience participation, involve painterly installations that incorporate  complex urban views, themes of modernist architecture, and historically  informed explorations of image and society.<\/p>\n<p>Writing in the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, art critic Christopher Knight notes that Ms. Schoenstadt\u2019s creations are those of \u201ca view painter.\u00a0 Her work records complex urban landscapes.\u00a0 Unlike her 18<sup>th<\/sup> century forebears, however, who lived in a world where visual  perception was being elastically stretched by telescopes, microscopes,  and other ground-glass lenses meant to aid the limited range of a human  eye, the Los Angeles artist surveys very different terrain.\u00a0 Her knotty  work charts the intersection between the bricks and mortar of actual  city streets and the effervescent elements of virtual reality.\u00a0 That\u2019s  where we live now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In determining the award The Art Center solicited nominations from leading curators, critics,  gallerists, historians, and educators from around the country.\u00a0 The  nominations were then submitted for a juried review by: Philipp Kaiser,  Senior Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Shawn Rossiter,  Editor, <em>15 Bytes<\/em>; Scot Indrisek, Senior Editor, <em>Modern Painters<\/em> magazine; Adam Price, Executive Director, Salt Lake Art Center; Micol Hebron, Senior Curator, Salt Lake Art Center; Suzanne Larsen, representative of the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Kim Schoenstadt&#8217;s solo exhibition will be at the Salt Lake Art Center November 4, 2011 through January 7, 2012.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Salt Lake Art Center and the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation announced today that Kim Schoenstadt is the inaugural recipient of the Catherine Doctorow Prize for Contemporary Painting.\u00a0 The bi-annual prize recognizes exceptional emerging and mid-career artists in the United States.
