Nothing quite says “Hot town, summer in the city” in Salt Lake City like the Twilight Concert Series, which launched its 2013 season on Thursday with Glasgow indie-pop band, Belle and Sebastian, and Portland’s Blitzen Trapper.\u00a0 An estimated 14,000 fans happily braved the near 100 degree heat, turning Pioneer Park into an urban music festival venue, one that will welcome new national acts each week through the summer.<\/div>\n

While opening acts sometimes play to hostile audiences, the crowd greeted Blitzen Trapper with enthusiasm. They were rewarded with the band’s signature brand of accomplished, earnest alt rock mixed with folk and a twinge of country.<\/div>\n

Belle and Sebastian is touring with one of the more unusual set-ups for summer music, including not only the requisite guitars, drums, and keyboards, but a bass, synthesizer, and string quartet, in addition to the seven band members.\u00a0 After opening with the instrumental “Judy is a Dick Slap,” they launched into their usual upbeat pop music featuring crowd favorites “I’m a Cuckoo,” “Another Sunny Day,” and “I Want the World to Stop.” Frontman Stuart Murdoch (there is neither a Belle nor a Sebastian; the band’s name comes from a children’s book) seems blessed with limitless energy, constantly jumping and dancing, adding a high energy vibe to the cheery music.\u00a0 At times nearly the entire band joined the audience in dancing. Blitzen Trapper joined the ensemble for yet another favorite, “Funny Little Frog.”<\/div>\n

The crowd was as cheerful and mellow as the music, throwing beach balls, dancing, and enjoying the abundant offerings of the ever-expanding Twilight Market.<\/div>\n

The Twilight Concert Series, which has now been around longer than its younger fans, will be offering a different lineup every Thursday night through Sept. 5.\u00a0 Upcoming acts include Flaming Lips and CSS, The National and Sharon Van Etten, Grizzly Bear and Youth Lagoon, Erykah Badu, the recently announced Ludacris, Kid Cudi and King Chip, Empire of the Sun, and MGMT and Foxygen.\u00a0 New this year, each concert is $5.
