{"id":13226,"date":"2012-09-06T13:16:46","date_gmt":"2012-09-06T19:16:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/?p=13226"},"modified":"2019-08-06T19:54:14","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T01:54:14","slug":"frank-mcentires-god-particle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/frank-mcentires-god-particle\/","title":{"rendered":"Frank McEntire&#8217;s God Particle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ve been hearing \u201chit it out of the ballpark\u201d a lot lately in the political arena so I hesitate to apply the phrase to an art show, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankmcentire.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank McEntire<\/a> really has done it with <em>The God Particle<\/em> at David Ericson Fine Art. It\u2019s a gem of an exhibit in a jewel box of a setting and, even if you\u2019ve seen Frank\u2019s work before, you shouldn\u2019t miss this. An old Victorian parlor proves, oddly, to be the perfect place to showcase his recent quirky and contemporary assemblage pieces orchestrated to a new and newsy scientific theme. It really took my breath away and I confess to being a friend who has seen and admired Frank\u2019s work over a lot of years. \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Inspired by physics work in a lab near Geneva where scientists say they have discovered the particle that gives matter mass and holds the universe together and, coincidentally, acquisition of old lab equipment from a high school and an engineering department, McEntire set out to reconfigure what he \u201cscavenges from small bits of [the] detritus\u201d of science and theology. \u00a0Each piece relates closely to the god particle theme with a remarkable grace, with the exception of the poised fighter pilot Buddha, seated on a Tibetanesque dais made from a vintage electric hair-curling machine. More clunky than graceful, it\u2019s a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p>The centerpiece, for me, is \u201cThe Six Perfections,\u201d a simple seated Buddha form with six mirrors angled out from the body reflecting the silvered surface.\u00a0 There\u2019s \u201cMonkey Wrench II,\u201d a mixed-media miniature of his gold-leaf covered beehive installation outside Abravanal Hall (see <a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15bytes\/12sep\/page2.html\">page 2 of the September edition<\/a>). An alcove holds several important small pieces including \u201cMemorial Prayer for the Sikh Six,\u201d a brass turbaned holy man contemplating a blue-and-white glass all-seeing God\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hours are M-F, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 418 S. 200 West next to the liquor store.
