Pleasant. Image by Geoff Wichert.

I refuse to accept the notion that artworks are puzzles meant for the audience to decipher, especially when it is assumed there is only one right answer. Ideally, an encounter with a work of art is more like a collaboration in which the artist and a viewer come to share an experience, one that is agreeable to both of them. Also, many hypotheses attempt to explain why artists make their art and why others want to see it. To me, the only satisfactory explanation is for pleasure. It comes to mind that almost everything humans do might be said to be, ultimately, for that reward.

This is not to say that “pleasure” alone is sufficient to explain what an artist struggles to find in a given subject matter or technique, even when it is sufficient to win over viewers. Printmaker and assemblage sculptor Abe Kimball, who is currently showing Architecture of Memory and Place in the Eccles Art Gallery at SLCC’s South City Campus, provides an ample assortment of his works that provide a relatively transparent demonstration of how pleasure arises from the struggle to successfully achieve a personal goal, and how the results of that effort can in turn please an audience with no particular idea of what the particular artist set out to do.

Abe Kimball did not start out to become an artist, perhaps because of a disinclination to follow in the footsteps of his father, Wayne Kimball. As both a printmaker and a teacher, Wayne is the sort who gives the term “leading” a literal sense, as could be seen when more than forty well-known Utah artists were invited to see what they could do with one of his prints. Although Abe confesses to having studied with his father, his primary area of concern was initially sociocultural anthropology. Success in this field often takes one of two forms: either conscientious labor in obscurity or the sort of notoriety and professional conflict that dogged the likes of W.E.B. du Bois and Margaret Mead. Such was the dilemma the younger Kimball faced.

Architecture of Memory and Place at the Eccles Art Gallery at SLCC’s South City Campus features assemblage art and printmaking by Abe Kimball. Image by Shawn Rossiter.

As he tells the story, Abe felt constricted by the rigid cultural expectations surrounding him, and he realized that his desire to get past this influential element in order to address his local audience was likely to be best achieved through the medium of art, an endeavor that generally soars above the skirmish of politics, academic or otherwise, and due to its visual, rather than verbal presentation, communicates less explicitly, even ambiguously. In that way, the exchange could remain flexible and more likely to reach a satisfactory conclusion.

Take, for example, the drawing titled “Pending Verification.” In this relatively straightforward image, a possibly sinister-looking gentleman in Victorian attire seems to suspend a supine woman in midair, entirely by the force of an invisible power. To a rational observer, the title discloses a provisional acceptance of something that, after all, is seen by one’s own eyes: evidence that asks to be taken without further examination. But “pending verification” argues that since it defies everything the viewer knows about how the real world works, it will require further exploration. Taken directly from one of Kimball’s numerous and wide-ranging sketchbooks—as witness the fold visible across it—this is the artist contemplating just where the dividing line falls between what one person proposes and another disposes.

While the sketch, though skillfully drawn, represents the artist’s weighing of a question, a formal, complete work is often closer to a performance. Thus “Fortuna Primigenia No. 22,” a lithograph, unveils a fully formed, nested set of occupying ideas that may unfold in the viewer’s mind. Fortuna is the Roman goddess of luck, chance, or fortune. Because her name identifies her as the “first-born” child of the supreme god Jupiter, she also ruled over the conditions of life’s beginnings, and so was insightfully associated with childbirth. Here the artist has chosen to show her as a nurse holding an infant, an image that also invokes the Virgin and Child from Christian art.

    Abe Kimball, “Fortuna Primigenia”

    Abe Kimball, “Pyrrho”

However, here, Kimball has introduced a further, subliminal observation such as characterizes a seeming majority of his art. This is the blending, or often the subtle, yet outright collision, of Time passing, as seen between differing elements of the image. The nurse wears a uniform, possibly from the ’50s, complete with a cap and formal details no longer in general use. And behind her, the overall setting appears to be a Romanesque building, which suits an historical age after the Roman era, but well before the age she specifically represents. Further, carved in the window’s frame is what appears to be a skeletal figure such as means to remind viewers of death, and so invokes the other end of the life cycle that begins in the nurse’s arms. Kimball has admitted to having a fractured sense of time, as befits a scholar who has witnessed the rise, fall, and return of cultural material that comes and goes throughout human history.

There is more to say about Abe Kimball’s prints and related 2-D works, but first it seems both reasonable and accurate to say that his sculptures present the viewer with parallel experiences, in the breadth of theme and subject, in their generally high degree of execution, and the range of materials and techniques. In a personal favorite, “Cannot be Hidden, but maybe Moved,” a stereotypical Italian hilltop town, a congested marvel of closely built towers reproduced in well-sculpted clay, has had its hill replaced by a brass, bell-shaped found object that serves as a pedestal, and beneath that an antique wooden dolly with iron wheels and a chain to allow towing it. It could have been a drawing or print, but instead is made of a combination of found and crafted parts. The more one looks at these assembled—in both senses of the word—works, the more they appear to constitute an inclusive chronology of human achievements interrupted by a particular sensibility: one that demolishes the separation wrought by time and replaces it with reminders of what they have in common. Here, the visual reference to the era of the Renaissance is particularly revealing. Rather than seeing history united by mere spirituality, Kimball’s art is about Humanism, and the recognition that, as the saying goes, no matter where you go, there YOU are.

Perhaps because of his range of graphic approaches, it’s possible to walk through Architecture of Memory and Place without recognizing the jewel in the crown of this artist’s many technical achievements. That said, the foremost of them is properly his mastery of lithography. While the chemical labyrinth that today’s printing, from litho to silkscreen to Xerox, accounts for most of the graphic material modern humans encounter, its history largely parallels that of photography. When they were invented, all of them were mysterious, even lethal processes, perhaps best represented by the daguerreotype, invented in 1839, and responsible for Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter’s affliction. That only a few technically adroit individuals could employ such techniques, while today’s version can be found universally in pockets and fanny packs, belies the reality that the digital version relies as much on the mindless creativity of its computers as on the efforts of the photographer.

Kimball’s lithographs, made on meticulously prepared limestone slabs, are like daguerreotypes in their masterful control of light in all its colors and moods. “Injuries and Greener Pastures,” the poster child for Architecture, displays such luminous colors that viewers may be tempted to look for a battery, or at least a hidden lamp. Or consider how his desire to suggest the collision of separate time frames is served by his ability to seamlessly combine colors with ghost-like, pale areas, like in “Sunset on a Capacious Friendship,” “At a Loss,” or “Of Heart and Sound.” Meanwhile, he makes a virtue of the size limit imposed by the finite practicalities of limestone bricks in works where he painstakingly collates numerous fractional perspectives into collages of unlimited scope. All these qualities come together in “Red with Equipage.”

During a privileged visit to his studio, Kimball showed fellow artists the tightly allocated space in which he creates these technically and aesthetically sophisticated works. Utilizing attaché cases for file cabinets, the door as an extension of the corkboard walls, and a classroom pull-down map as a window shade, he almost dances around the immoveable furniture of his craft: the sink where the stones are ground after each application, the racks of rollers and shelves of ink and chemicals, and of course, the press where each iteration becomes permanent. All this leaves nooks and crannies for one of the essentials of artists like him: found objects that resonate in some visible or conceptual fashion that might lend an idea, or at least some essential mental energy, to the creation of things that, while they’ve never been seen or known to exist before his efforts, clearly come out of a rich past that he never ceases to recollect and explore.

<a Main Street in Mount Pleasant. Here Abe demonstrated yet more of his previously undisclosed skills as he managed to remodel the chaotic architectural residue of numerous previous tenants and their uses, all the while observing the many changes in building codes and practices. The results include CuriosiTea, Serenity’s newly expanded bookshop. Given that any serious book search in central Utah used to involve the 70-or-so-mile drive to Orem, CuriosiTea, with its loaded shelves and a lively online presence, promises to suit the reader for whom Mount Pleasant might as well be Timbuktu. There may be a theme here: whether it’s visual art, sculpture, or a book, 49 West Main Street in Mount Pleasant just might be The Place.

Before and restoration images for CuriosiTea in Mount Pleasant.
