Local artist Jorge Rojas brings his Networked Performance Festival to Salt Lake this weekend with Low Lives 4.\u00a0 The two-day festival features live performance-based artworks from around the world that are transmitted over the web and projected in real-time to international venues.<\/p>\n

The festival was founded in 2009, with Rojas as the curator.\u00a0 \u201cLow Lives<\/em> is not simply about the presentation of performative gestures at a particular place and time,” Rojas explains, “it is also about exploring the potential of live streaming networks as a creative medium connecting performance artists with audiences around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here’s how it will work. Locally, Rojas will host the event at the UMFA’s<\/a> Great Hall on Friday, April 27, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 28 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Contemporary artist Michelle Ellsworth, recent recipient of the 2011 USA Knight Fellow award, will perform two live \u201cperformance sculptures\u201d from her Please Consider<\/em> series at the UMFA on Friday at 9:00 p.m. and Saturday at 3:30 p.m. In addition, 50 other performances taking place around the world will be streamed online and projected onto a screen at the museum.<\/p>\n

Rojas is a multidisciplinary artist and curator. He uses traditional and new media, as well as performative elements to investigate communication systems and the effect of technology on artistic production, social structures and communities.
