Drawing heavily from her experiences growing up in Hong Kong, Ng uses color as both an expressive and personal language, conveying the emotions, histories, and lived experiences that often resist simple description. Her paintings transform dense urban environments into affectionate portraits of home, belonging, and cultural memory.

The exhibition features cityscapes from Hong Kong alongside scenes inspired by Ng’s travels, reflecting her long-standing fascination with architecture and the built environment. What began as a college project exploring images of her hometown evolved into an ongoing body of work that returns repeatedly to Hong Kong as a source of inspiration and personal grounding. Through richly colored compositions, Ng examines the relationship between place and identity while celebrating the beauty of ordinary moments and familiar streets.

Ng earned degrees from both the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, graduating with a BA in 2020. She has received support through programs including the Salt Lake City Arts Council’s Artist Career Empowerment Grant and the New Beehive project, and completed a residency at Studio Kura in Fukuoka, Japan, in 2023.

Anderson-Foothill Branch Library
1135 South 2100 East
Salt Lake City, UT 84108
801-594-8611

Hours: Monday–Thursday 10 am–8 pm; Friday–Saturday 10 am–6 pm; Sunday closed.

Salt Lake City May 30 – July 10, 2026 Reception: May 30, 3:30–5:30 pm Hong Kong-born painter Mercedes Ng presents A Retrospective in Color, a collection of oil paintings that explores memory, identity, and place through vibrant depictions of architecture, city life, and everyday scenes.
