In 1907, Utah State University—then Utah State Agricultural College—hired Calvin Fletcher as its first art faculty member and founding head of the art department. Over four decades, Fletcher mentored generations of students and helped establish Logan as a center of modern art in Utah. Though a native of Provo, Fletcher studied in New York, Chicago, London, and Paris, and brought a wide range of stylistic experimentation to northern Utah, inviting artists such as Lee Randolph, Birger Sandzén, and Ralph Stackpole to collaborate and teach.

The exhibition also highlights the work of Irene Thompson Fletcher and their son Dale Thompson Fletcher, revealing a family deeply committed to artistic practice, teaching, and care. While each worked in a distinct style, all three shared a belief in experimentation and education as central to art-making. Together, their works illuminate a multigenerational story of mentorship, resilience, and creative exchange. The exhibition is co-curated by Danielle Stewart (USU) and James Swensen (BYU).

Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art
650 N 1100 E, Logan, UT 84322

In conjunction with the opening of Meet the Fletchers, NEHMA is hosting a gallery talk at 5:00 pm February 21 featuring Ronald Jenkins, grandson of Calvin Fletcher, and the exhibition’s curators, Danielle Stewart and James Swensen.

Logan, Utah February 21 – July 25, 2026 Meet the Fletchers traces the artistic and educational legacy of one of Utah’s most influential art families.
