In addition to the Historic Homes tour mentioned in yesterday’s post, Utah Heritage Foundation <\/strong>hosts its sixth annual Preservation Conference, From Mud to Mod, <\/em>looking at preservation from the earliest of Utah\u2019s structures through modern structures that make up our Landscape on May 3-5.<\/p>\n

Dr. Estevan Rael-G\u00e1lvez, Vice President of Historic Sites for the National Trust for Historic Preservation will give a free public talk at 6 p.m. on May 3 at the Salt Lake City Main Library Auditorium, 210 E. 400 South about the importance of memory and history, recognizing that when it is truly alive, memory invites us to make history.\u00a0 For him, this opportunity is situated in places, both the built environment and the natural environment.\u00a0Protecting those places, the stories, and the people that nourish them is something he is dedicated to working on, and hopes to inspire others to do the same.<\/p>\n

Estevan is a native New Mexican, raised in both northern Taos County and the southern part of Colorado\u2019s San Luis Valley. Prior to joining the National Trust, he served as the Executive Director of the National Hispanic Cultural Center, a 51-acre campus in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n

He will also speak at a pre-conference workshop, \u201cRe-imagining Historic Sites\u201d on May 3 from 9 a.m. – noon at Memorial House in Memory Grove. Tickets are $50 per person.<\/p>\n

Conference events on May 4 include a 7:45 a.m. breakfast at the Masonic Temple, 650 E. South Temple, followed by education sessions at 9 a.m. on a variety of topics including rehabbing historic homes, endangered local historic districts, good lobbying techniques and a section on revitalizing South Salt Lake. Sessions are $15 with pre-registration; $20 at the door. The Heritage Awards Luncheon that day honors individuals, organizations, businesses and projects that have achieved excellence in preservation over the past year.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Home tours this year include historic South Temple Street on May 5th<\/sup> from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Salt Lake Modern\u2019s Tour of the St. Mary\u2019s and Oak Hills neighborhoods June 16 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.\u00a0 Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of tour. A special combo ticket for both tours is $25 in advance.<\/p>\n
