Elegant elegies to her late parents and a delightfully wicked one to an ex\u2014\u201cSestina in Prose: Three Dreams\u201d and \u201cDegas Dancers\u201d\u2014and a superb breezy commentary on butterflies, \u201cA Note on the Apparent Lowering of Moral Standards in the Lepidoptera,\u201d are standouts.<\/h4>\n<h4>But there\u2019s so much more to spend an evening with: the creatures that inhabit Coles\u2019 quarter-acre in the canyon; the moon as it rises and sets; her shrink-to-fit Levi\u2019s and the shared realization that she won\u2019t wear out another pair. \u201cIf I had a mess of red hair\u201d is as charming and ironic as its title promises.<\/h4>\n<h4>The book represents a thoughtful gathering of some of this poet\u2019s finest work to date and is deserving of a place by your favorite chair or on your bedside table\u2014you surely will pick it up frequently.<\/h4>\n<h4>Tom Sleigh, author of <em>The King\u2019s Touch<\/em>, says \u201cColes is a rarity in her generation or any generation: her understanding that poetry is a quintessentially formal art has allowed her to create her own conventions and explode the usual dichotomies between public and private life . . . She is a true original.\u201d<\/h4>\n<h4>Coles toys with form but takes it \u00fcber seriously. This may have something to do with her being a Distinguished Professor at the University of Utah, where she teaches courses in creative writing, poetry, and poetics.
