Bountiful
February 26 – March 26, 2026
Surface and Sacrifice explores the emotional and generational weight carried by immigrant and undocumented families whose labor sustains Utah’s built environment. Drawing from his upbringing in a mixed-status household, Cruz-Ayala reflects on the unseen sacrifices behind the homes, neighborhoods, and communities his parents helped construct.
Using concrete, sand, copper, earth pigments, and acrylic, the artist transforms materials associated with construction into metaphors for endurance and resilience. Traditional Mexican visual languages — including papel picado patterns and altar-making sensibilities — weave through industrial surfaces that evoke construction sites, protest banners, and devotional spaces.
Through abstraction, Cruz-Ayala honors the invisible infrastructures of labor and invites viewers to feel the weight and dignity embedded within them.
