Weekend Recommends June 23 – 26

Got a few bucks to spend on some artful activities this weekend? Or are you stony broke? Either way, we’ve got suggestions for taking a walk on the creative side.

Thursday, June 23

Salt Lake City
Utah Arts Festival, of course, with free admission today only. Otherwise, it’s $12 for adults, $6 for service members and 65 and older, free for kids 12 and younger. Celebrating their 40th year, the fest runs through Sunday at Library Square and Washington Square in downtown Salt Lake City.

Some of the state’s art collection, including work by artists we have lost recently (Anna Campbell Bliss, Trevor Southey) will be on display in The Gallery at Library Square, 4th floor of the Main Library.

Millie & the Moths, 7:30 p.m., Garden Stage, all-girl folk punk band.

Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, 8:15 p.m. Festival Stage

The Phoenix Jazz and Swing Band w/Jack Wood, 10 p.m., Festival Stage.

 

Friday, June 24

Salt Lake City
Utah Opera, “Random Acts of Opera,” 12:30 p.m. Main Library, Street Theater.

utah-symphony-orchestraUtah Symphony, 6 p.m. on the Festival Stage at the Utah Arts Festival, a first-time-ever performance at the fest for our renowned classical orchestra. Lots went into arranging this, so do check it out.

Kids’ Mini-Workshop: Rock Poetry 3:30 p.m. SLCC Community Writing Center

Beats Antique: 9:45 p.m. Amphitheater Stage, Utah Arts Festival, Electronic Music.

 

Saturday, June 25

Salt Lake City
steep-canyon-rangersSteep Canyon Rangers at The State Room – Winners of the 2013 Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album for “Nobody Knows You,” this group from North Carolina is danceable, too. Doors 8 p.m., Show 9 p.m. with special guest Six Feet in the Pine, 21 and over. www.ticketfly.com The Rangers perform Sunday at the Utah Arts Festival, too. As will Six Feet in the Pine.

Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra (moved from their traditional Friday night performance for the Utah Symphony), play at the Arts Fest on the Festival Stage at 7:30 p.m.

Mayor’s Artists Awards for 2016 will be presented between 7 and 7:45 p.m. at Washington Square. Recipients include Jason Hardink, http://artistsofutah.org/15Bytes/index.php/jason-hardink-receives-2016-mayors-artist-award-for-performing-arts/, Kathryn Stats, Betsy Burton, Utah Symphony/Utah Opera, Utah Tibetan Association, and Utah Arts Festival.
