The University of Utah’s BFA exhibit returns to the Felt Building in downtown Salt Lake City this week.
Every year the senior students at the University of Utah, Fine Art Department, are in charge of curating the Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibit as part of their graduation. They have the opportunity to write a grant in order to obtain funds to acquire a building, pay for expenses, such as advertising, supplies, and a juror. They do a small fundraising campaign to afford food, awards, and entertainment.
The U of U students first took over the large space back in 2010 (see our article here). The owners of the building have once again donated the 15,000 sq foot space at a reduced rate, and the works of the graduating BFA students will be on exhibit there April 19 – May 6. Exhibit organizer Aerin Collett says that according to the student body, the 2010 exhibit was one of the best shows the U has put on in the past decade. They are hoping to match and even exceed the success of that show.
The exhibit opens with a reception on April 19th, 6-9pm. The art will be garnished by food and the sound of two live bands — Luna Lune and The Zero Summers, both local emerging Utah artists who are becoming very popular in the music circuit.Phillips Gallery’s Meri DeCaria will be jurying the exhibit and awards will be announced at 7 pm.
The University of Utah Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibit will be available for viewing at the Felt Building April 19th, 6-9 pm, Saturday, April 20, 11 am- 6 pm, Friday and Saturday, April 26-27th from 11 am to 6 pm, and Friday and Saturday, May 3-4th from 11 am- 6 pm (as graduation will be the weekend of May 3-4th, the students are expecting a large turnout for the final two days). The Felt Building is located at 341 S. Main in Salt Lake City.

What a great idea, good for the students and University, too.
