The Weird Cartoons, Kitsch & Culture of Low Brow Art at SLCC

Salt Lake City
January 16 – February 21, 2025

Opening Reception: Thursday, January 16, 2025
5:00 – 7:00 PM

The Weird Cartoons, Kitsch & Culture of Low Brow Art celebrates the vibrant, irreverent world of Low Brow Art, featuring works from 40 local artists and others from as far afield as New York and Mexico City. Drawing from styles like underground comix, graffiti, street art, tattoo art, and Pop Surrealism, the exhibition honors the boundary-pushing creators who combine humor, culture, and art history into works that defy traditional art norms.

Curator James Walton reflects on the rich lineage of this movement, which draws inspiration from Dada, Mad Magazine, Surrealism, and psychedelic art, championed by pioneers like Robert Williams, who coined the term Low Brow Art.

This exhibition invites visitors to embrace the humor, creativity, and cultural critique found in these boundary-breaking works, highlighting their influence from comic books to trading cards, movie posters, and beyond.
