So Much To Do Tonight, Time to Plan

There’s a lot going on tonight for the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll, so a little planning won’t hurt. Here’s our suggestion for an itinerary:

410

6:00 pm: ART IN TRANSIT
You’ll want to get in as much as you can, plus at the Art in Transit-West Side Stories event, the early bird gets the worm.

Salt Lake City Arts Council and 15 Bytes, Utah’s Arts Magazine, have partnered with Salt Lake Gallery Stroll to offer a special event spotlighting public art at stations along the new North Temple Airport Light Rail Line.  Visitors are invited to start their tour at the Mestizo Gallery (641 W. North Temple), which is featuring a photographic history of the Westside along the TRAX line by Erik Daenitz. The first 200 art strollers who arrive at the gallery after 6:00 pm and mention “15 Bytes” will receive a free TRAX pass for the airport line that evening.  With pass in hand they can get on and off to look at art on the line’s six station platforms. Three Utah artists created art for three of the stations: Ruby Chacón (Jackson-Euclid Station), Darl Thomas (Power Station), and Shawn Porter (1950 West Station). These and all the artworks are described in a guide prepared by the SLC Arts Council which will be available at Mestizo during the stroll. You can also read about it in this month’s edition of 15 Bytes.

7:00 pm: STROLL BABY STROLL

This is where it gets tough. You need to start squeezing in as much as you can before 8 pm (see below). So our recommendation is Broadway. There are plenty of other great venues and exhibitions (see them all at gallerystroll.org), but this is one of the few places you can park in one place and stroll from one gallery to the next. At 163 E 300 South you can hit Surface Slant, the Utah Surface Design Group exhibit at Michael Berry Gallery (see our video post earlier this week); then slide down to the paper exhibit at Red Queen Book Arts (see our post today); and finish off with the exhibit of works by David Habben (see our video spot in the April 2013 edition) and Dan Christofferson.

8:00 pm: 35×35 and UTAH’S 15

This is where you’ll want to cap off your night, Artists of Utah’s 35×35 exhibition at Finch Lane Gallery.

If you haven’t seen the show, don’t miss the exhibit that everyone is talking about. Get your first look at the artists who will be changing Utah’s visual landscape in years to come.

If you’ve already seen the exhibit it’s time to come back because tonight you may see the work with new eyes: with the help of our team of professional art historians, we’ve added interpretative labels to many of the works; and tonight, down in the basement we’ll be running outtakes from our video interviews with the 35×35 artists – hear what they have to say about their own work.

And most important of all, you’ll get to find out the winner of the People’s Choice and other awards. We have received over 200 ballots for the prestigious and lucrative ($200) People’s Choice Award. If you haven’t cast your ballot there’s still time. At 7:30 we’ll be closing up the voting and at 8 pm we’ll announce the winner of the 2013 35×35 People’s Choice Award.

We’ll also be announcing the winners of the three juror’s prizes and the Artists of Utah Board of Directors Award (each $200).

UTAH’S 15

With Artists of Utah’s 35×35 exhibit we’ve introduced you to Utah’s young generation of artists.
Now let us introduce you to some of its more established and influential artists.
Utah’s 15 is our new program to celebrate Utah’s most influential artists. We asked the public to nominate artists in all fields who through their artist achievements, as well as community involvement, have had an influential impact on Utah’s cultural landscape.
We received 97 nominees and then asked a panel of 250 individuals from the arts community to select the top 15.
Tonight, we’ll be announcing the fifteen artists selected to receive this honor.
The announcement will be made in conjunction with the announcement of the 35×35 award winners.

Finch Lane Gallery is located in The Art Barn at 54 Finch Lane (about 1375 East and 100 South in Reservoir Park) and on Friday, April 19th is open from 6 to 9 pm for Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.
