Rotate Orbit Whirl Shuffle Dial Twist at UMOCA

Salt Lake City
January 17 – May 31, 2025

Opening Reception: Friday, January 17, 2025, 7–9 PM

Rotate Orbit Whirl Shuffle Dial Twist is a two-channel video installation by Garnica that intricately weaves together clay, sound, time, and place as primary materials. The installation projects videos on opposing walls, creating an immersive space where natural and human-made elements converge.

Garnica explores the intersection of sound and environment through her clay musical instruments and ambient recordings of the grasslands where the performance was captured. The sonic layers—one produced by the instruments, the other from the natural surroundings—form an intimate dialogue between artist and place, recorded and projected within the gallery.

Time as a material plays a pivotal role in this installation. The grassland, steeped in geological history, connects past and present, while the looping videos evolve throughout the day, creating chance-based compositional arrangements that offer unique experiences to each viewer.

This sculptural and sonic installation invites sensory immersion, dissolving the boundaries between the natural and human-made.
