Ways of Seeing is a multi-media collage exhibition by Phoenix Ostermann, exploring the ways in which we reference, borrow, and reinvent the past in visual culture. Ostermann invites viewers to engage with the work from different perspectives—stepping back or squinting—to reveal new interpretations of otherwise familiar imagery. The title of the series draws from vintage postcard publishers of the American West, reflecting themes of memory, reinvention, and historical reflection.
A Juror’s Award winner at the 2016 Statewide Annual Mixed Media & Works on Paper, Ostermann’s practice is rooted in giving forgotten and discarded images new life. Formerly working under the moniker Reclaimed Sentiment, Ostermann’s collage work continues to breathe fresh meaning into historical materials.
