Mollie Hosmer-Dillard

Mollie Hosmer-Dillard, an MFA graduate from Indiana University and BA holder from Oberlin College, is a professor at the University of Utah, teaching art in incarcerated spaces. She has received numerous accolades, including residencies in Germany and Finland. Her work, primarily large-scale, layered paintings, is inspired by the rich textures of forests and water surfaces. Through her art, Hosmer-Dillard challenges the conventional derogation of ornamentation in Western painting, highlighting its ties to racism, sexism, and colonialism. Her approach involves abstract experimentation with materials and techniques like laser-cutting, silkscreen, and textiles, aiming to represent nature’s inherent vitality and critique industrial society’s perspective on the natural world.
