ARTIST STATEMENT
Light often becomes swallowed up by its role in revealing observations as opposed to being observed itself. Liza Trépanier-Ray creates work that positions its lens on light as the subject matter as opposed to an illuminator. Trépanier-Ray’s recent body of work fixates on conversations between light and language in the form of photographic objects. She draws influence from organic light sources to create visually joyful riots of highly saturated color on panels and screens. Trépanier-Ray interacts with her materials by sanding down paper until it reveals curious, chromosomal forms created by the glue underneath. Her work masquerades as a collection of artifacts especially in its pseudo-linguistic forms that crawl across the surfaces. Trépanier-Ray interacts with her work in ways that embrace materiality, curiosity, and a wonder that stems from form, color, and time.
