15th Street Gallery presents paintings by John Collins and mixed media works by Douglas Smith for February’s Gallery Stroll. Smith’s encaustic works showcase the dynamic interplay of wax, translucency, opacity, carving, and layering, revealing the depth and complexity of the medium.
“Encaustic is a workout that demands the normal aesthetic planning, but with forward thinking about how layers of wax, translucency, opacity, carving, layering of alternate materials, and accretion are going to play out,” says Smith. “It demands concentration. It’s a mental and physical workout each time I go into the studio! You can really lose yourself in the flow and demands of this medium.”
