Painting | Utah Artists - R

Janet Ritchie

As I am from the Southwest I have an abiding love of our deserts, plants and iridescent sunset skies. Most of my subjects therefore have been landscapes, which I have depicted in forms ranging from full figuration to full abstraction.  Formerly I worked extensively in watercolors and pastels, but today my passion is for oils. I am fond of the whimsical, often disposed to the quirky and wide open to that welcome moment of imagination psychologists call pareidolia, when we activate the remarkable human ability to see patterns that don’t exist. Thus I love to perceive in the obscure —  random images or patterns of light and shadow in nature — something clear and meaningful, something I can try through art to let someone else  see.  My goal in all my paintings is to create enough interplay of elements that the viewer keeps discovering new things.

Since my early years in Utah I have lived on both coasts, north and south, and travelled extensively in the US.  Recently I have developed a painterly interest in the Mediterranean and now take yearly sojourns in the South of France and Italy.

I have a degree in graphic arts from Platt College, San Diego, CA. I have taught watercolor classes in the Pacific Northwest.  My works have been shown and sold in Tacoma WA, Portland OR, Vancouver BC, San Diego CA, and Tubac & Tucson AZ.
