This weekend one of Utah’s newest visual arts activities launches at Squatters Pub Brewery in Salt Lake City. Sketch Sundays, which takes on the top floor of the brew pub starting at 6 pm, is a time where artist and patrons can get together in a social atmosphere to talk, sketch, buy and sell art created at that night’s event.
Organized by Tim Lawlor and Janell James, the event is inspired by a similar one that Lawlor came across while visiting San Francisco. A center table of around 12 professional, ‘invited artist’ will sketch new work that evening, in whatever medium (pencil, oil, paste, watercolor, acrylic, chalk, collage, etc.) and of whatever subject matter they choose. Around the exterior of the room there will be plenty of space for anyone else to sketch. There will be an “ART WALL,” where anyone can post new work created that night for sale. All sales are between the artist and the patron and are between $10 and $50.
“This is an excellent opportunity to start an art collection of works that would be difficult to purchase from a professional artist at this price point,” says co-organizer Janell James, a local artist. “It is a fun opportunity to mix and mingle with artists, be a part of a different social scene, network, and be a part of the artist’s creative process.”
In Squatters upstairs room, personal pizzas will be made to order, there will be beer on tap, wine, and everything else you have come to expect from this local pub brewery. The downtown location will make the event appealing to out-of-towners staying at nearby hotels and looking for something to do on a Sunday night.
