Hunter Bailey: Shield Your Eyes at Bountiful Davis Art Center

Bountiful
February 21 – March 28, 2025

Hunter Bailey’s Shield Your Eyes confronts consumerism, apathy, and the decline of the American Dream through evocative paintings that blend realism with the flat aesthetics of advertising. His work explores discarded objects as metaphors—a decaying boat in a field, once a cherished aspiration, now abandoned, mirroring societal disillusionment. The exhibit critiques corporate influence, wealth disparity, and digital escapism, questioning how engagement with reality has become optional in an era of distraction.

Bailey, based in Salt Lake City, is a graduate of the University of Utah College of Fine Arts. Raised in a small Colorado mountain town, his art is shaped by industrial decay, abandoned spaces, and countercultural influences from literature and music. Through his paintings, he seeks to co-opt the language of advertising to expose the hollow promises of consumer culture, challenging viewers to reconsider what we throw away—objects, dreams, and even autonomy.
