Diego Torres is an emerging fine artist and undergraduate at the University of Utah. Working with charcoal and oil paint, he projects the mindsets of his figures into the artwork. Pulling the viewer into the personal space of the subject. Diego’s practice is mainly as a selfreflective tool to mitigate the stress of everyday life. His work is treated with a wet, painterly approach to define the forms of the subject. These qualities engage the viewer to assess the intensity of emotion in each piece, engaging the viewer to grow awareness of their mental states. He aspires to create work that connects communities to become more self-aware and empathetic of one another
ARTIST STATEMENT
Interpreting my engrossed imagination through paint and drawing mediums my work diversely represents whimsical and themes of melancholy. Creating theatrical representations of desire and divergent realities my work creates an emotional response. My impulse is to translate my experiences onto a surface, through all of its chaotic impractical presentation. Using saturated color schemes when depicting these psychological events, the viewer is pulled into the personal space of the subject. I approach my work by first identifying how the subject matter and color palette work together. Beginning each painting I aim to create an impression of the psychological state of the subject. Imposing the same state of of being onto the viewer. By exaggerating the light source, my work applies deeper pertinence of the experience of the subject. Demonstrating the intensity of emotion through mark making and quality of paint, the viewer experiences varying levels of tension. These paintings are representations of mental states I’ve experienced in the past. Recording these experiences onto a surface serve as self reflection. Engaging the viewer to grow awareness of their own mental state as well. Inspired by imposto and al a prima paintings, my work is treated with a wet, painterly approach to define the forms of the subject. An amalgamation of these qualities engage the viewer to assess the intensity of emotion. Such as passion, desire, regret, dread and fear.
