A striking new mural titled “Daylight” now graces the side of an industrial building along Salt Lake City’s Folsom Trail. This expansive artwork, running 275 feet eastward from 1000 West, is the latest visual enhancement to the rapidly evolving trail. The mural, with its intricate patterns of blue lines symbolizing flow and circles representing clouds, is a powerful tribute to the theme of water and movement.
Created by artists Miguel Galaz, Alan Ochoa, and Luis Novoa of Roots Art Kollective, “Daylight” was selected from more than 30 proposals submitted through a public call for artists that indicated a budget of $15,000. Their design was chosen to resonate with the ongoing efforts to bring buried sections of City Creek to the surface—a process known as daylighting. The mural is part of the broader City Creek at Folsom Trail project, which envisions transforming this former rail corridor into a thriving ecosystem and a central hub for the Euclid and Poplar Grove neighborhoods.
This project is the result of over 30 years of work spearheaded by the Seven Canyons Trust, in collaboration with CRSA, BIO-WEST, and Avenue Consultants, and with significant input from local residents. The mural project received funding and support from a variety of organizations, including the Seven Canyons Trust, RDA, Crocker Catalyst Foundation, River District Business Alliance, Salt Lake City Arts Council, Align Complete Real Estate Services, and the Poplar Grove Community Council.
At the mural’s unveiling, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall praised the mural as a significant step in the transformation of the Folsom Trail into a community centerpiece. “The Folsom Trail is on its way to becoming a community centerpiece,” she said. “The finished design bringing parts of City Creek to the surface offers next-level activation of the Trail, which would give Euclid and Poplar Grove residents and visitors increased connection to nature and each other.”
The “Daylight” mural is just the beginning of the improvements planned for the corridor. The vision for the City Creek at Folsom Trail Daylighting Design Plan includes further enhancements that will not only revitalize the area but also foster a deeper connection between residents and the natural environment.
