Crossroads: Change in Rural America, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution, explores the transformative economic, demographic, and cultural changes in rural America over the past century. At the turn of the 20th century, nearly 40% of the population lived in rural areas, but by 2010, that number had dropped to less than 18%. Despite these shifts, rural communities remain vital, producing food, fuel, and cultural contributions that sustain the nation.
This exhibition provides rural communities with a chance to reflect on their past and future, sparking conversations about the challenges and opportunities faced by small towns in modern America. Crossroads highlights how economic innovation and cultural uniqueness have helped rural areas thrive, even as they grapple with negative perceptions and changing demographics. The exhibition encourages communities to engage in discussions about how to maintain vibrant, sustainable rural areas for future generations.
Presented in tandem with Connected to the Land at Granary Arts, this exhibit is made possible by Utah Humanities and Granary Arts in partnership with Snow College Karen H. Huntsman Library.
