Holladay Arts is pleased to host a collage class with Holladay artist Erin Berrett!
Students won’t be painting, but will be collaging, cutting and pasting to create a Cut and Paste “Painting.” It’s all about seeing what you can do with already-made textures and colors, and combining them in unusual ways. You really can’t mess up or make mistakes! We’ll be working on 8″x10″ panels with magazines and glue sticks or matte medium. No drawing or painting skills required. You should bring several landscape or still life images to work from.
Erin’s Creative Process
I begin composing with hundreds and hundreds of cut paper pieces, working from dark to light (as with oil painting) and from big shapes to small (as with brushstrokes). I like seeing what I can do with “already made” textures and colors by combining them in unusual ways. From inches away it appears chaotic and not realistic at all, but when viewed as a whole, the effect is representational.
Erin Berrett began painting at a very early age and has never stopped, earning a B.F.A. from the University of Utah. Since then, her paintings have been regularly displayed in galleries and shows, winning praise from numerous critics and publications. One journalist wrote that her “treatment of everyday objects transcends their utilitarian elements.” Berrett herself insists that talent alone does not suffice. She regularly logs forty-hour workweeks in her studio, accompanied by her faithful dog Stan.
