It’s appropriate—and one suspects not by chance—that Bunnie Reiss’ mural for the 2024 South Salt Lake Mural Fest faces the parking lot of Bjorn’s Brew (though it’s actually painted on the side of Elite Auto Sales, 2161 S. State Street). The mural’s themes of nature and animal companionship align perfectly with Bjorn’s Brew, a local coffee shop known for donating to animal charities.
The Los Angeles-based muralist and artist is known for her vibrant, dreamlike murals that blend folklore, mysticism, and cultural symbolism. Drawing inspiration from her Eastern European and Russian roots, her work often features animals, celestial motifs, and botanical elements. The dog figure features circular motifs and geometric patterns representing the sun and the cosmos, with its eyes resembling starry portals, blending the cosmic and the earthly. The smaller cat figure, topped by a serene bluebird, also features intricate patterns. They are set against a landscape of rolling green hills dotted with wildflowers and stylized clouds. In one corner, rain showers fall on a mountain, symbolizing growth and renewal, while the setting sun behind the dog suggests the passage of time and the end of a journey.
