Brandee Waters

Brandee Waters is a painter currently working and creating out of Salt Lake City. She has always turned to art to communicate her feelings with those close to her. She pursued an art education at Snow College where she got her Associate Degree before turning her attention to philosophy and gender studies for a Bachelor’s from UVU. She often refers to philosophical ideas through her art; many of them are born through some line of questioning. She likes to layer surrealist imagery and abstract symbolism to create depth in the experience of her art. Recently, brandee’s work has been about trying to communicate her emotions and thoughts in the layered and complicated way she experiences things. Often she makes allusions to other art that pushes into the same inquisitive spaces. She uses bright and varied colors to help preserve the intensity of the feelings captured. With her work, she hopes to offer the viewer an escape to another emotional landscape to show how rich life can be.

ARTIST STATEMENT
This work is all about the extremes of emotions and the depth of reality that so often goes unrecognized. I’ve been inspired to try to bring my emotions out on the canvas, to show what my inner world is like in a way that preserves the extremes. This body of work tries to maintain my world as it comes through, leaving the complexities and oddities. My art draws in the inquisitive souls, the ones willing to linger and wonder. Those with dense dreamscapes and swirling emotional sides can find an opportunity for an escape in my work. I always aim to transport the viewer to a specific feeling. Whether it feels familiar or offers a view to a different space entirely, I hope to give the viewer a chance to experience something. I try to draw them in and reward them when they do with special symbols and abstract messages. I like to do a lot of blending and layering in my work, especially through pastel colors to create rich backgrounds. Since so much of my work is about emotions, I find it is a useful visual tool to depict the way feelings melt into each other to shape our complex inner worlds and I try to capture the whole spectrum. I explore how colors are connected and I enjoy seeing the ways different emotions call for different color combinations. My work often starts in a line of questioning, often about pushing against some kind of form. These pieces touch on themes like femininity, time, intense emotions, dream worlds, and healing. Most of them show a transition of some sort or being caught in the waves of change. I am often inspired by work that touches on deep themes and also work that carries the viewer to another place, I hope to offer both in my art. These pieces are done primarily with acrylic paint. It’s been my main medium for the past couple of years and is often how my most expressive work can come through.
