Utah’s newest and smallest gallery opened in Helper this past weekend. The size of a mailbox, the gallery is located on the west side Helper’s Main Street.

The Helper Mini is the brain child of Kevin K. Perry, a designer and artist who has been active in the Salt Lake City arts community for two decades. He has worked with Struck, the University of Utah, and AIGA, and co-founded Salt Lake Design Week and helped rebrand the Utah Arts Festival.

The gallery’s inaugural exhibition featured the work of Salt Lake City artist Trent Call. Viewed out of context, Call’s works in the gallery appear like over-sized versions of what the artist displayed at Finch Lane Gallery in October, 2023. But the cutouts measure only an inch or two high.

The Helper Mini joins several “normal” size galleries in the former coal town, including Steven Lee Adams Fine Art & Framing, Helper Art Space and the Kilpatrick Art Garage. The town holds a Gallery Stroll the first Friday of every month. With the aim of connecting artists with the creative community in Helper, Perry plans on staging new exhibitions for each stroll.

  1. What a delight!

Art works are all about play, meaning the opposite of reality (not work. Art is hard work). Galleries often struggle to keep the art alive while performing a necessary business function.

It’s wonderful to see a gallery that gets to play, too. Life feels better already.
