Kate Jarman-Gates is a mixed media and glass artist who has lived in Salt Lake City’s west side since 2016. In 2021 she started Clever Cucumber, a free community art studio for her neighbors. With a BA in Art Education, her favorite thing to do is teach, as well as working on her own artworks and commissions when there is time. Previously she taught art in public schools, completed an AmeriCorps VISTA service term at Clever Octopus, and managed her local Buy Nothing group. Currently she also serves on the Salt Lake City Arts Council representing District 1. She’s inspired by her husband, Brendan (who makes her art practice possible); her silly house rabbits and pet goldfish; the kindness of her neighbors; her journey with pregnancy loss and infertility; and the satisfying challenge of sustainable, compassionate living
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is a two-sided coin, revealing the connections between what appears separate. On one side, I glue, tie, and solder broken artifacts together. Rather than working ex nihilo, I recontextualize existing fragments of paper and glass by joining them anew. On the other side, I tie broken people together with new experiences. Through community art learning, I connect people with ideas, processes, and each other, fashioning a new whole (such as in the community projects “Interconnected 2” and “Untitled”). Between me and students, people and their community, art and people, students and the world, (and sometimes glass and paper), I labor to knot them together into a grand, aware ecosystem.
