Up & Upcoming to the South

UTAH COUNTY
Woodbury Art Museum UP: InCiteful Clay is a collection of ceramic objects that offer provocative critiques of current social and political inequities. The exhibition is toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of Mid-America Arts Alliance (M-AAA) and the National Endowment for the Arts.|1|

Brigham Young University Museum of Art UP: Showcasing ralli quilts from the exceptional contemporary textile collection of Patricia Ormsby Stoddard, Fabric of Belonging explores how historical traditions contribute to the deep sense of belonging that ralli quilts provide for people living in the areas of Sindh, Pakistan and West India. For their owners, ralli quilts are a personal form of identification that connects them with their region and their heritage.|2| AND: The major traveling exhibition CUT! Costume and the Cinema takes an in-depth look at the art of making costumes that set the scene, establish character and provide authenticity in period films. Films represented in the exhibition depict five centuries of history, drama, comedy, fantasy and adventure through costumes worn by such famous film stars as Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Craig, Kate Winslet, Sandra Bullock, Uma Thurman, Anjelica Huston and many others. AND: Amar Kanwar, A Season Outside reveals the tension surrounding the militarized border between India and Pakistan. The work is an abstract digital video projection of the sunset ritual of closing the gate on the border at Wagah-Atari juxtaposed with images of enforced division, theatrical military posturing, and real violence in the region.|3| AND: Loving Devotion: Visions of Vishnu. Focusing on images of Vishnu and Krishna that span centuries of history, the exhibition explores how bhakti (the practice of fervent, impassioned devotion to deity) influences the lives and worship of Hindu people and reveals the depth and intimacy of their relationship towards the divine.. UPCOMING: Kim Schoenstadt, Block Plan Series: Provo, is a culmination of community effort and installation, that features three-dimensional wall drawings inspired by the architecture and identity of Provo, Utah.Springville Museum of Art UP: Gone to Paris: Utah Artists Abroad. Notice His American Shirt, a group exhibition curated by Rebecca Maksym and featuring work by Christopher Kelly,|4| Tyrone Davies,|5| Marcela Torres,|6| and Morganne Wakefield,|7| addresses the legacies of manifest destiny, the 19th century belief that expansion of the United States throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable. Looking to the historic frontier of the American West, this exhibition explores how notions of modernization and westward movement are appropriated and re-envisioned in the contemporary imagination.
CEDAR CITY
Gallery Gala UP: With her Life of Color exhibit, Aimee Bonham demonstrates the integral role color plays in her creative process. From feeling or emotion to selection of a limited palette to finished product, her work, which is sometimes read as abstracted landscapes, generalizes location and shows movement in a larger context. Muted obscure organic forms and animated pencil mark-making result in colorfully harmonious art works full of life and passion.|8| AND: With his Ancient Hues exhibit, Andrew Marvick contemplates the concept of abstract art being invented earlier than the 1900s. For some time his art has been driven by an idea: what if the formal foundations for abstraction and non-objective art had developed organically alongside classical naturalism beginning with the early Renaissance at the start of the 15th century? Marvick concludes as a way of proceeding in his art, he starts with the language of form, then places it in the visual context of time. His paintings are a way of reconstructing the history of modern art as if it were, in fact, the history of art. Created specifically for the gallery, the exhibit solidifies Marvick’s complex technical skills utilizing oil, watercolor, acrylic, plaster and resin on canvas.|9|

Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery UP: Featuring works by some of Southern Utah’s most celebrated artists as well as introducing the art of rising young talent, the annual Southern Utah Art Invitational Summer Exhibition & Sale will display over 100 pieces from many mediums including painting, photography and ceramics. Curated by Iryna Sophia Stein, an Arts Administration MFA candidate, this exhibit features fine works from Goya, Whistler, Millet, Picasso, Chagall, Miro,|10| Dali, Chihuly and others. This special exhibition is a rare opportunity to experience a cornucopia of treasures from the Brathwaite Fine Arts Gallery’s vaults.
