UTAH MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART UP: No chance to move backwards and see, Megan Geckler's site-specific installation transforms the gallery space, inviting the viewer to take an exploratory journey through polychromatic examples of architecture, design, sculpture, and painting. The exhibit presents woven wall murals, a custom sculptural extension of architectural elements, several modular sculptural works, and nine tape ‘paintings’ that offer a Joseph Albers-esque color study of the colors of the installation.|0| Through February 23, 2013. AND:Battleground States brings together local, national, and international artists who critically engage with the discourse of visual culture and gender studies. Through video, sculpture, installation, and photography, these artworks explore ideas of how figuration, the body and identity intertwine (see our review page 1).|1| Through January 5th

THE LEONARDO UP: Blockbuster exhibition Da Vinci -
The Genius, is a multimedia exploration of the work of Leonardo da Vinci, featuring over 200 pieces, including super-magnified, high-resolution images, 3D animations and other high-tech displays. Through January 27. AND: The Labyrinths of the Mind, featuring the art of Anna Campbell Bliss (see our article in the October 2012 edition), with a screening of Arc of Light: A Portrait of Anna Campbell Bliss.|3|AND: Geomorph Exhibition at the Lab features amazing shape-changing geometrical structures, animations of dynamic geometries, and learning about the geometries of the past. UPCOMING: First annual art celebration, featuring workshop tutors, residency artists, and selected work from our Fall season of workshops, including printmaking, collage, clay and book art.
ART BARN/FINCH LANE GALLERY UP: Celebrate the holidays with a visit to the Holiday Craft Exhibit & Sale. This distinctly artful experience features original artwork of dozens of local artists. Items for purchase represent a variety of styles and materials. New this year, an array of artwork by local folk artists.
UMFA UP: 5 Blocks is an exhibition of youth artwork created in collaboration with UMFA educators by students at Hawthorne Elementary and Granger High School. By investigating a five block area near their school, students demystified how we shape the spaces we live in and how those spaces shape us. Through April 21. AND: Dale Nichols: Transcending Regionalism,
an exhibition spanning much of the artist's long career.|4| Nichols' early paintings focused on the often-difficult relationship between Midwest farmers and their land. His stylized landscapes and red barns, representing both shelter and sustenance, held images of hope for a struggling nation and honored the agrarian ideal. Through March 18. AND: Horizon: Selections from the Guild of Book Workers showcases the current work of the members of the Guild of Book Workers who were invited to interpret "horizon" as broadly or as narrowly as they wish. Through December 30, 2012.
AND: Nancy Holt: Sightlines
offers an in-depth look at the early projects of this important American artist whose pioneering work falls at the intersection of art, architecture, and time-based media (see our October 2012 edition).|5| Through January 20. AND:
salt 6: Emre Huner features the premier of a new film by the Turkish, Berlin-based artist, whose work explores questions surrounding progress, modernity, science fiction, and utopian impulses. |6|(see our review page 4). Through January 13, 2013.
ALICE MERRILL HORNE GALLERY UP: The Last Fifty: Modern and Contemporary Works from the Utah State Fine Art Collection is a selection of works by Utah artists from 1962 to the present. Although there is a chronological sequence apparent in the exhibition, the scope of practice is wide and varied. Included in this exhibition are traditional natural and urban landscapes by the likes of LeConte Stewart and Richard J. Van Wagoner but also works influenced by modernist movements — abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, minimalism — in the work of Lee Deffebach,|7| Edward Maryon and Anna Campbell Bliss. NOX CONTEMPORARY UP: The Herb & Dorothy Show, the gallery's first group show in 2 years features work from Colour Maisch, Cris Baczek, Reclaimed Sentiment, Beth Krensky, Tom Aaron, Court Bennett,|8| Robin Ward, Laura Sharp Wilson & John Sproul, and is named for Herb & Dorothy Vogel, a pair of civil servants in New York City who amassed 4,782 works of art said to be worth millions of dollars which they donated to the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC in 2008. On display will be lower priced work from each artist such as works on paper, prints and smaller works. Through January 4th.

ART ACCESS GALLERIES UP: Holiday Group Exhibition, with work by over 36 local artists. Through December 19. AND: Landscape, photographs by Miranda Whitlock exploring the dichotomy of landscape photography of the 19th and 20th centuries -- which was used to promote the idyllic lifestyle of the west -- to the landscape photography of the 1970s New Topographics photographers, who focused on capturing the relationship between man and the land. MESTIZO ARTS UP: In honor of the mesoamerican/indigenous celebration of el Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), this exhibit will consist of four community-built altares. Ofrendas (offerings) will be placed on each altar to honor our ancestors and those no longer physically with us.
WILLIAMS FINE ART UP: For Pearl Harbor Day we will honor our veterans and acknowledge their sacrifice by featuring vintage planes and ships by artists David Meikle, Ken Baxter and Stephanie Deer.
