Metropolitan Salon UP: Art by Ashley Mae Christensen.|0| Ashley Mae Christensen's commitment to community is evident in her work as director of Provo's Gallery OneTen. During the month of February, you'll find that same community spirit in her artwork, on display at Metropolitan Salon. Christensen says she has been creating with the idea of the "gift economy" in mind. She believes art can be a bonding gift between people, even strangers, rather than a commodity. Christensen works on paper, using the most common materials in an attempt to break down the idea that creativity and creation are exclusive activities. "I rarely do single, large paintings," she says of her work, which she prices so that the average person can afford them, "but rather work in small, atmospheric series that execute an honest and personal narrative. I look at the painting as an object for communication. I imagine in my head the painting in the middle of a large field, myself as the artist comes through and over much terrain and experience to arrive at the creation of the object, while the viewer (hopefully) is required to come across another sort of terrain to also arrive at the object, because there is honest intent and sincerity, both the viewer, maker and object are in some way gratified and made better by the experience, even though the experiences may vary greatly."

Many of these pieces have never been shown before in the United States. "Beyond that, these works offer a window into an era of British history that is important to the development of our own history and culture. In this historical moment — the beginning of the industrial world — artists are trying to find a way to deal with the newness and complexities of modern life.” says Museum of Art Curator Paul Anderson. The works in the exhibition will be grouped into five thematic categories: religious works, paintings depicting mythology, literature and history, paintings of everyday life, paintings by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and works by other European artists. ST. GEORGE AREA
Approaching Storm by Craig Denton
St. George Art Museum UPCOMING: Bear River: Last Chance to Change Course in the Main Gallery. The Bear River is one of the longest rivers in America never to reach the ocean. Its 500-mile journey begins in northern Utah's Uintah Mountains, hugs the border with southwestern Wyoming, loops through southeastern Idaho, and heads back to Utah where it empties into the Great Salt Lake west of Brigham City. University of Utah communications professor, documentarian, photographer, and author Craig Denton has followed the sometimes rugged, sometimes lazy course of the Bear River. The result is a recently published book and this accompanying photographic exhibit.

With camera in hand, Denton recorded the dynamic hydrology and unique morphology that still ties the river to ancient Lake Bonneville."I've situated my camera at points along the Bear's course where important historical moments in the development of the West took place," the artist says. "I've also chronicled the stories of the stakeholders who rely on the river and who increasingly place more demands upon it." Through March 8, 2008.
