Zim’s Studio | photographs & text by Bill Fulton

Francis Zimbeaux’s studio rests on top of his home, added there in the early seventies by the artist and a carpenter friend, Connie Gorder. Connie remains to this day a very close, while-away-the-afternoon talking and sipping vodka compadre.

Access to this studio is a challenge at any age given the necessary angle for a stairway into this space. Imagine the regular ascent and descent for a man in his early nineties.

The location of the studio is metaphorical in that Zimbeaux’s art comes from the higher reaches of his imagination rather than a more physical reality.

These photos were taken on a sunny Saturday in early March of 2005. Even the trash can, a cardboard box on which many a brush had been wiped, was artistic but became the only object “not allowed” to be included in this set.

Artists of Utah News
New Partnership

Artists of Utah has recently made a new partnership with The Arts Organization, which has become a sponsor of our new "Studio Space" series, the first installment of which you see above.

"Studio Space" is a fine art project by Utah photographers exploring the personalities of artist studio spaces. In 2006, Artists of Utah and The Arts Organization will be presenting an exhibition of the "Studio Space" series in conjuction with a workshop by The Arts Organization entitled "The Organization of Space."

Artists of Utah is also happy to anounce that Dana Hagio is the new Regional Director for the Utah County area. Hagio will be coordinating our efforts to bring together the visual arts community in that area.

On the Spot

Darryl Erdmann on the spot:

Darryl Erdmann

WHAT ARE YOU READING LATELY?

Robert Frost poetry. I don't read as many books as I used to. With poetry, you can let it sit for two or three days and then read it again and get something different from it.

WHAT IS HANGING ABOVE YOUR MANTEL?

An original oil painting by William Forester from 1932. It's a gentleman playing the piano and a younger gentleman playing violin.

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ANY ARTST TO PAINT OR SCULPT YOUR PORTRAIT WHO WOULD IT BE?

Vermeer. Because (sorry, Thomas Kinkaid) he was the first painter of light. And the first painter I really loved. My second choice would be Rauschenburg.
