The University of Utah Guest Writers Series presents an evening of poetry and nonfiction featuring Tom Sleigh and Alan Shapiro.
Alan Shapiro has published many poetry collections (including Reel to Reel, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and Night of the Republic, finalist for both the National Book Award and the International Griffin Prize), 4 books of prose, including The Last Happy Occasion, finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Winner of the Kingsley Tufts Award, LA Times Book Prize, an award in literature from The American Academy of Arts and Letters, and The William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America, he is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His new book, Against Translation, has just been published.
Tom Sleigh’s many books include The Land Between Two Rivers: Writing In an Age of Refugees (essays); House of Fact, House of Ruin;Station Zed; Army Cats (John Updike Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters); Space Walk (Kingsley Tufts Award); and Far Side of the Earth (Academy Award from the American Academy). He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, an American Academy in Berlin Fellowship, a Lila Wallace Award, two National Endowment for the Arts grants, and many others. He is a Distinguished Professor at Hunter College and works as a journalist in the Middle East and Africa.
