The BYU Art Club at Provo’s Storefront Galleries

Ehren Clark, a regular contributor to 15 Bytes, is curating an exhibit this month in downtown Provo. You’ll be able to see A World Without Art, an exhibit juried from entries by BYU’s Art Club, all this month beginning this Friday, December 7, during the Provo Gallery Stroll. You’ll be literally strolling by the exhibit. A World Without Art is part of Provo’s Storefront Galleries, a program that places art in empty storefronts along Provo’s Center Street.

Clark says he chose the exhibition’s title as a response to what he sees as a general apathy towards the visual arts in his hometown. All members of Brigham Young University’s fine art department were invited to participate. The core of the exhibition comes from the Art Club, a group of faculty and students, including Brian Christianson, Jason Metcalf and Gian Pierotti, who want to engage the local community with progressive art.

Raquel Smith Callis, Public Arts Program Director for Provo’s Downtown Alliance notes that while the Storefront Galleries program was previously funded by an assessment made on local businesses, the Provo City Council recently voted to fund the project themselves in the future.
