Sunny Taylor’s abstract paintings embody a built, almost sculptural aesthetic, with strong ties to architectural influences. Her compositions and patterns are developed through meticulous, labor-intensive processes and spontaneous interactions with paint, color, texture and meaning. She creates an illusion of objects lying next to each other by layering acrylic paint and manipulating it with a squeegee, tape, sanding and glazing.
In describing the new paintings, Sunny says”, I began this body of work with one specific goal in mind – to lean more on my intuitions and less on my calculations, measurements and plans. Intuitions, gut feelings, or hunches are a part of the creative process that cannot be taught, or learned from another. This intuitive wisdom must be gained on one’s own, through continual practice perceiving and heeding these quiet naggings. There are rules for mixing color, for measuring and for technique, but it’s the intuitions of the spirit of the maker that breathe true originality and vitality into a work of art.”
