This year’s Murals on Main, in Midvale, showcases an array of talented artists transforming the cityscape with vibrant murals, including Eric Karbeling’s butterfly mural. Painted on the side of Architecture Belgique (7583 S. Main Street), the mural captivates viewers with its vivid blue background and a swarm of colorful butterflies.
The mural is characteristic of the artist’s distinctive “squiggle” style, characterized by playful and improvisational forms that breathe life into his creations. The butterflies, depicted in various sizes and intricate patterns, appear to be in motion, fluttering across the wall in a harmonious dance. The background, a swirling sea of blue and purple hues, adds depth and dynamism to the piece, enhancing the sense of movement and wonder.
Eric Karbeling, known artistically as Squiggle Papi, hails from Gaithersburg, MD, and is currently based in Honolulu, HI. His journey into the art world began with a passion for music and graphic design, leading him to study design at the University of Miami in Florida. Initially working as a graphic designer, Karbeling found the medium limiting and turned to painting to pursue greater creative freedom. He has created more than 100 murals, collaborating with various organizations, including schools, cities, major brands, and community projects across the country.
