Square Kitchen Mural by Arizona Artist Egypt Trumpets the Power of Play

Created in April, 2024, as part of South Salt Lake’s Mural Fest, this vibrant mural trumpets its joy alongside the State Street on ramp to I-80 east.

Created by Egypt, originally from Los Angeles and now based in Arizona, this mural encapsulates the artist’s signature approach to portraiture as a form of storytelling. She moves away from traditional narrative techniques, opting instead to convey stories through vivid, bold imagery. The mural features large, dynamic figures rendered in a style that combines silhouetted forms with bursts of vibrant, almost psychedelic color patterns.

The artist’s statement on her Instagram page reflects the mural’s intent: “As we grow older, sometimes we forget to nurture and stay tuned with our inner-child. Life doesn’t have to be so serious. Put passion, fun, and play into everything you do. Just a reminder to keep hold of our younger selves.”

The work is situated in South Salt Lake City’s Creative Industries Zone—a hub recognized as hosting the largest collection of street art in the state—and forms part of a dynamic open-air gallery that expands annually with new contributions from both local and national artists. It is hosted by Square Kitchen, which has taken over the former KFC franchise at 2435 S. State Street.
