Please join Gallery MAR in welcoming Sarah Winkler for an artist reception for her solo show on Friday, December 17th at 6pm. The artist will be in attendance.

UK born, Colorado-based artist Sarah Winkler captivates her audience with her new series titled “Mountain Glow.” Playing with habitat, texture, and color, Winkler creates another fascinating body of work with tree lines, geological formations, and the cyclical nature of mountain life.

The mountains glow with the promise of a bright tomorrow. A shiny nugget deep in the heart of the rock waiting to be found. A soft light on the surface of an eternal steadfast presence of rock and minerals remind us to be strong, patient and optimistic. Change comes sometimes suddenly, sometimes predictably, sometimes slowly through the eons of time.

The title of the exhibition ‘Mountain Glow’ refers to not only the treasured light of the short days during the Winter Solstice, but also pays homage to the mining history of the region. Park City has a 1000 miles of historic mining tunnels underfoot. These channels follow the veins of precious metals Silver, Gold, Lead and Zinc that were extracted by mining companies from the 1860s to the 1980s. I’ve been imagining what lies deep beneath the surface and strata of her mountainous terrain and allowing the paintings to reflect and glow with metals, minerals and crushed rock indicative of the region’s mother lodes.

The paintings in this exhibition connect us from the depths of the inner Mountain to the vast star filled Universe and the eternal patterns of nature. I’m letting nature guide me in color, texture and mood through her most introspective and restful season, Winter.

Winkler works experimentally with paint, pigment, additives, resists, brushes, and unconventional tools to create her textures and imagery, mimicking the forces and patterns of nature that sculpt and change landscapes over time. The cut and layered aesthetic in her work reinforces concepts that the earth is not a static place.
