Sara Serratos presents Who Sustains Our Tables?, a solo exhibition featuring twelve multidisciplinary artworks that honor the labor of those who cultivate the land in the Americas and nurture communities globally. The exhibition weaves together sculpture, installation, video performance, photography, and film to explore themes of nourishment, spirituality, and labor, while advocating for decolonization, memory consciousness, and the reclamation of pre-Columbian cultural roots.
Serratos’ work draws attention to the systemic exploitation of indigenous, Afro-descendant, and mestizo laborers, from the colonial era to modern inequities. By focusing on the sacred and historical significance of fruits and vegetables, such as corn, nopales, and tomatillos, the artist critiques the commodification of produce and highlights its integral role in daily life, identity, and spirituality.
Through this evocative body of work, Serratos invites viewers to consider the interconnectedness of land, labor, and culture, asking critical questions about freedom, justice, and sustenance in the context of both history and modern agriculture.
