Repainting the I: The Intermountain Intertribal Indian School Murals at NEHMA

Logan
January 25, 2025 – December 6, 2025

Opening Reception: January 31, 6-8:30 pm

From 1950 to 1984, the Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah, served as a federally funded boarding school for Native American youth, evolving into the Intermountain Intertribal Indian School in its later years. During this time, students created murals across campus that celebrated their cultural heritage and identity, offering a powerful assertion of resilience within an assimilationist system.

Repainting the I showcases eleven murals, originally painted by students and preserved in secret before the school’s demolition. Now restored after a four-year conservation effort, these artworks are publicly displayed for the first time. The exhibition explores the legacy of the school, the impact of Native boarding schools in the U.S., and the role of art in cultural survival and self-expression.
