Currently a student at the University of Utah studying art and biomedical engineering, Pablo Cruz-Ayala creates multi-media works that explore the complexities of Latin American identity. The work weaves together elements from pre-Colombian Indigenous cultures and contemporary Western standards to foster dialogue on cultural value, identity, and the experiences of immigrants and marginalized communities in modern society.
In “Migration Without Integration” we see a figure wading through water against the backdrop of a dry and mountainous landscape. The patchwork nature of the piece, with its varied textures and materials, suggests the fragmented identity of a migrant rooted in one land and culture while making their way through a new one.
