In No Woman Is an Island, Matalyn Zundel offers a contemplative portrait of her sister, capturing a moment of quiet self-reflection through layered, textured oil painting. In a world where women have historically been cast as muses rather than makers, Zundel turns the canvas into an act of care—honoring another woman’s complexity, presence, and inner world.
A Salt Lake City native, Zundel earned her BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Utah. Her work, rooted in oil’s capacity for nuance and transformation, centers the lived experiences of women who often go unrecorded in dominant cultural narratives.
