“Losing Ground” offers a powerful exploration of the many losses our world faces today, from environmental decline to societal divides. Through Steele-Makasci’s expressive paintings, prints, and mixed-media sculptures, alongside Vincent’s abstract pieces in oil, wax, and charcoal, the two-person exhibition invites viewers to reflect on themes of empowerment, cultural identity, isolation, and the fragile search for truth in a fractured world.
Nancy Steele-Makasci, an interdisciplinary visual artist and art educator at Utah Valley University, engages with social justice themes through her work in printmaking, painting, drawing, and book arts. She has honed her skills in Mokuhanga at MI-LAB in Japan, exhibited internationally, and inspires her students to pursue their artistic dreams while addressing pressing global issues. Marcus Vincent, originally from San Francisco and raised in Buffalo, New York, creates non-objective art that explores emotional and psychological states through color, surface texture, and Zen-like gestures, reflecting on the tumultuous socio-political landscape and personal losses that press upon the contemporary human condition.
