Milky Silky Soft & Pretty: Works by Michelle Montrose Larsen at Argo House

Friday, March 1
6 to 9 p.m.

in conjunction with Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll

“Milky Silky Soft and Pretty was created in response to advertisements and commercial displays geared toward women. My work is not a judgment or a form of activism, but an attempt to replicate my experience with these advertisements. I am seduced by their sleek idealism, amused by their euphemisms and logical fallacies, and repulsed by their underlying messages regarding consumption and standards of beauty.”

LECTURE: Michelle Montrose Larsen

6 to 7:30 p.m.

Hear first-hand about this series of work – followed by Q&A.

We are constantly surrounded with flawless and tantalizing depictions of food, bodies, and products. However, our bodies are covered in hair, sweat, and grime, and the physical act of eating, digesting, and copulating is vulgar and base, involving vigorous movements and churning bodily fluids. I am drawn to the sleek idealism presented in commercial sources, but I am also amused by their efforts to disguise or omit the realities of the body we experience daily. Amusing or not, advertisements work at creating a new reality. They tell us what a body should look like, what food should taste like, and what products we absolutely need, even when our daily lived experiences contradict these ideas. By using images straight from these sources and creating unusual and uncomfortable combinations, I seek to represent the confusing, tantalizing, and contradictory experience of being human in today’s consumerist society.
