The H City, an exhibition by Mercedes Nok Yi Ng, explores the complex identity of Hong Kong through vibrant, evocative paintings inspired by Daai Hei (Cantonese Opera). By juxtaposing fictional opera characters with everyday Hong Kongers, Mercedes delves into the societal pressures that lead individuals to hide their true selves. Her serene cityscapes offer a reflection on the resilience and strength of Hong Kongers as they navigate political challenges, capturing the power and fragility of cultural identity during uncertain times.
Mercedes Nok Yi Ng, originally from Hong Kong and now based in Salt Lake City, expresses her identity and memories of her homeland through her artwork. Her cityscapes and opera-inspired figures convey the emotional depth of Hong Kongers and the evolving narrative of her home city.
