Lenka Konopasek: Drawing the Light In

Everyone knows the story of how Utah was founded to be a sort of lifeboat, a vessel to safely bear the worthy into a better future. What some don’t realize is how much that remains true in the present. Modern refugees come from around the world, seeking the solace that comes from belonging while standing apart. That may be part of what keeps Lenka Konopacek here, a refugee from Communist-occupied Europe who, in her art, elevates human catastrophe into aesthetic experience. This month, we glance at her ongoing project for the Salt Lake Art Center, hoping to encourage everyone to experience this briefly illuminated, illuminating space.
