ARTIST STATEMENT
Kate Hortin is an artist from St. George, Utah, who works in the expanded field of painting. She uses her own figure to study how to love herself despite her imperfections and past physical and emotional traumas. In this series, titled “In a State Of…,” Hortin uses oil painting and physical fabric sewn on to the canvas to create paintings of herself using the subtractive painting technique. By expressing strong emotions and raw feelings of what she has been through, the choice of style strives to consider what is beautiful by society’s standards and questions why it is that, today, many women feel uncomfortable in their body. The colors serve to emphasize the emotions Hortin is trying to convey, and then, combined with the body language held by the figures, requires the viewer to consider the beauty found in all bodies, including their own. By exploring these ideas, she concludes that all women of any body shape, including hers, are beautiful. Hortin is currently a student at Utah Valley University studying Art and Design, emphasis on painting and drawing, who graduates in Spring 2024. She hopes to continue her education and get a Degree in Secondary Art Education.
