John Hughes has been writing for our Hints & Tips column for over three years now, providing advice on everything from painting in the snow to choosing an easel to how to get out of an artist rut. We decided it was finally time to see him in action. So in January, while the valley was covered in a blanket of smog and snow plows scraped the streets, Dale Thompson visited his West Valley studio to watch him paint a winter landscape and discuss his process.
Dale Thompson has a B.A. in Liberal Arts from The Evergreen State College and an Masters degree in communications from Westminster College. Her writing career includes work for a local theatre, journalism in Park City, and freelance contributions for various nonprofit organizations.

wonderful to see his process from start to finish. I am loving these videos you are doing of such fine Utah artists in their studios.
Nice work. You are a true champ.
Fantastic to have a glimpse into John’s studio. I recommend his workshops (some may call it bootcamp) but he expects you to GET serious!
